A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry - 605 Words
Lorraine Hansberry, the author of ââ¬Å"A Raisin in The Sunâ⬠, was born in Chicago, Illinois. Hansberry was the youngest of four children. Her father Carl Augustus Hansberry was a prominent real estate broker and her mother Louise Perry was a stay home mother. She grew up on the south side of Chicago in the Woodlawn neighborhood. Later the family moved into an all-white neighborhood, where they experienced racial discrimination. Hansberry attended a predominantly white public school while her parents fought against segregation. In 1940 Hansberryââ¬â¢s father engaged in a Supreme Court case of Hansberry v. Lee which was a legal battle against a racially restrictive covenant that attempted to prohibit African-American families from buying homes in the area. As a result in Supreme Court case of Hansberry v. Lee it made the family subject to the hellishly hostile in their predominantly white neighborhood. Hansberry went on to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison but she found college to be uninspiring to her passion in writing. In 1950 she left college and moved to New York City to pursue her writing career. There she married Robert Nemiroff and with his success with his music career Hansberry was able to leave her job as a waitress and cashier to devote herself to writing. In 1959 she wrote ââ¬Å"A Raisin in The Sunâ⬠, the play was an instant success. This statement describes the exact response of musicians to the assassination of the young American President, John F. Kennedy. Toward the end of his third year of presidency, Kennedy was shot and killed in a parade in Dallas, Texas. Americans were shocked to have lost such a promising young leader, and a somber silence swept across the nation as Americans lamented his death; this silence, however, was broken by the melancholy music of mourning (Baldacci). The assassination of President John F. Kennedy started a new movement of music that was inspired by the tragedy and differed in structure from previous music.
